The Scottish Crofting Federation (SCF) is running a series of training courses on practical skills for crofters and small-holders.
The first group of courses will include Polytunnel Growing on 26th July, Habitat Management for Birds on 23rd August and a 2 day Dry Stone Walling course on August 20th and 20st. Other courses running later in the year include Vet Skills (and as I'm about to go and put my dog's thermometer where the sun doesn't shine, I think I could do with that one myself!); sheep dipping and small scale horticulture. The courses are taking place at various locations throughout the crofting counties.
The courses are open to anyone and you can find a full listing of all the dates here. Meanwhile, aspiring woodland crofters can have a look at the SCF's most recent publication - a new guide called Managing Small Woodlands in the Highlands and Islands. It's been published in conjunction with Forestry Commission Scotland and Highland Birchwoods and you can download a copy here.
