Community Land Scotland, the umbrella body for community land-owning groups, welcomes two new members this month.

The first group, Scalpay Community Land Steering Group, are currently investigating the different projects which they can develop to reinvigorate their community. The Island of Scalpay, just off the coast of Harris, has been generously offered to the community at no cost by the current landlord, Mr Fred Taylor.

The second group, the Machrihanish Airbase Community Company in Kintyre, is in the middle of negotiations with the Ministry of Defence.   This is a situation where their experience, when the buyout goes through, will be of great value to others who seek transfer of public land to the community.

In October, a group from Machrihanish visited South Uist to see at first hand the progress being made by another Community Land Scotland member, Storas Uibhist, the community landowners of Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay. David Cameron, chair of Community Land Scotland commented on the visit - 'This is a prime example of the strength of Community Land Scotland and the willingness of its members to share knowledge, experience and enthusiasm.'
