An alternative approach to fund-raising is being tested out by the Sleat Community Trust as they seek to raise £20,000 for their purchase of Tormore Forest.
Through the National Forest Land Scheme, they're looking to bring 1,000 acres of woodland currently owned by Forestry Commission Scotland into community ownership. To help raise the purchase price, they're looking for 1,000 people to sponsor an acre of woodland each at £20 per acre. You can find further details and make your sponsorship donation via their website.
Alternatively, if you like to see a little suffering in return for your money, you can sponsor Duncan MacInnes, Sleat Community Trust director, in his outdoor swimming bid - see here for further details.
