The residents of Tolsta, 14 miles north of Stornoway, have taken ownership of their local shop, after securing a funding package from a range of organisations.
The community have also negotiated a deal with the Scottish Co-operative to supply produce at the same prices as those offered to the Coop store in Stornoway. Funding for the community buyout came from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Leader programme, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and their own councillor's ward fund. Shares in the shop have also been sold for £25 each.
However, like all local shops, they're now dependent on the community being prepared to spend their money in the shop. And as I watch yet another supermarket home delivery van drive through our village, I really hope the Tolsta residents will rise to the challenge.
