Hillswick shop has a community future

The Northmavine Community Development Company in Shetland has successfully purchased the local shop in Hillswick and plans to re-open it under community ownership.

The shop and post office closed earlier in the year, but consultation showed that local people were keen to try community ownership.  Funding for the purchase of the shop, house and outbuildings was secured from a range of sources, including Highlands and Islands Enterprise Community Land Unit.

Future plans include re-opening both the shop and the post office and converting the outbuildings for shop storage and office and workshop space.  In a remote and fragile community such as Northmavine (located in the north western part of the Shetland mainland), local shops can provide a vital meeting point for both residents and visitors.
