As of January 1st, 2012, Scottish charities can apply to convert to Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) status. The SCIO set-up gives trustees a high level of protection against personal liability and is expected to be popular amongst Scottish charities. New charities have been able to apply for SCIO status since April 2011 and existing charities can now chose to convert to the new legal form.
You can read full details of how a SCIO works on the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) website. OSCR are also planning an outreach programme in 2012 to provide further information on SCIOs.
