Forest leasing proposal dropped

Environment minister, Roseanna Cunningham MSP has confirmed that the government does not plan to press ahead with its controversial suggestion to lease parts of Scotland's national forests to private companies. 

Instead, she's asked the Forestry Commission to look at other options to raise the money required for tree planting on a scale that will contribute to climate change targets.  Suggestions made include looking at how to make the Scotland Rural Development Programme more effective in encouraging woodland creation; investigating tax incentives and continuing the process of disposing of surplus land.  You can read the full text of the minister's press release here
