Feed-in tariffs set for small scale low carbon electricity

The government has published details of the cash rewards available to householders and communities who install low carbon electricity generating technologies, such as wine turbines and solar panels.

The feed-in tariffs (FiTs), as they're known, have been the subject of speculation for some months now, but the recently published rates will apply from April 1st onwards.  Under the scheme, those installing appropriate technologies will get paid for the electricity they generate, even if they use it themselves.  The level of payment will depend on the type of installation used, but importantly, will be linked to inflation.  The scheme should make the pay-back time for most technologies much shorter and will hopefully encourage an increase in the amount of locally produced green energy.  For full details of the scheme and the individual rates, see the government's decision document.
