An RSPB application to the European LIFE+ fund has secured funding for a project to work with crofters and farmers to protect the machair grasslands on the west coast of Scotland.
The project, which matches £1m of European funding to support from Comhairlie nan Eilean Siar, RSPB and Scottish Natural Heritage, is due to start in January 2010. The funding will be used to provide machinery, labour and advice to crofters and to encourage the use of techniques such as seaweed fertiliser, late harvesting and arable 'stooking'. The RSPB hope that the grant can complement and extend the funding available for machair management under the Scotland Rural Development Programme (SRDP), which some crofters find difficult to access. You can read more about the project on the RSPB's website.
