So far there are over 800 members, and more than 500 articles in our archive.

We hope you will join the network so that you can share your views, experiences and aspirations of owning and managing land-based assets.

You can join for FREE - all you need is a valid email address. You'll receive a monthly email digest of news and views from the network, and get access to all the interactive features of this site, which show up when you log in.

The most recent articles are available on the home page - previous articles are in their relevant topic areas (browse the 'Topics' menu on the left).

Rum to Benbecula to Machrihanish?

The start of the new tax year marked a new start for the Isle of Rum, with the transfer of a further 65 hectares from Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to the Isle of Rum Community Trust.  A few days earlier, Benbecula Sport and Leisure Community Company successfully bought several parcels of former Ministry of Defence (MoD) land.  And elsewhere the Macrihanish Airbase Community Company have successfully registered their interest in purchasing what I can only describe as 'a heck of a lot' from the MoD.

On Rum the additional land transfer complements the 35 hectares transferred in the first phase.  However, SNH will continue to have a significant presence on the island as an employer and landowner.  The challenge now will be for both the community and SNH to really work in partnership to ensure the growth and development of the island community.

Meanwhile, down on the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula, the Macrihanish Airbase Community Company are continuing in their bid to purchase the airbase.  There's potential for the sale to include an aircraft hanger, around 200 buildings, a 10,000 foot runway, sports facilities, accommodation and over 1000 acres of land.  They're currently awaiting the Scottish Government valuation for the site and will be starting on the community ballot process shortly.  You can find further details on their website.
