Bute backs a buyout

Residents on the island of Bute have voted in favour of a community buy-out of 2,000 acres of land at the northern end of the island.  The land has been put up for sale by Lord Attenborough, with a purchase price in excess of £1.3million.  The vote was Scotland's biggest ballot on a community buy-out so far, with forms sent to around 5,200 people.  Achieving a 50% turnout looked like it might be challenging for the Bute Community Land Company, but they eventually received responses from 52.5% of those eligible to vote, with 93% supporting a buy-out.  The challenge now will be to raise the necessary funding to take the project forward.  You can find more details on their proposals on their very slick website.
