Residents in the South Lochs area of Lewis have voted 195 to 87 in favour of seeking to buy-out the common grazings on the Pairc estate where they live.
Unless an agreement is reached with the current owner, the vote will mean that the community has to use 'Part three' of the Land Reform Act. This allows crofting communities to apply to ministers for the right to acquire and control the croft land where they live and work and is not dependent on the land being put up for sale. Crucially the application will also now include the purchase of the 'interposed lease', established by the current Pairc Estate landowner to cover a potential wind farm on the estate. The value of that lease is likely to increase dramatically if the wind farm receives planning permission. You can find further information on the background to the Pairc Trust and the ballot on their website.
