Professor Elinor Ostrom is this year's joint winner of the Nobel prize for Economics for her work on common property resources. The first female winner of the prize, Professor Ostrom's work has analysed the economic governance of common resources, based on field studies with communities in Africa and Asia. She's argued that collective action in resource management can be successful and has advocated the many advantages of community control. Confirming the award, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said "Elinor Ostrom has challenged the conventional wisdom that common property is poorly managed and should be either regulated by central authorities or privatized."
Maybe such public recognition on the world stage will encourage everyone to take community ownership seriously - to see the full text of the Academy's statement, click here.
